Spring Nest Craft

Check out this Spring Craft by Victoria Eilers. Thanks, Victoria!

We did a recent blog post on how crafting can help with brain development. You can find that blog post HERE.

What types of things does THIS craft work on? Here are just some of the clinical applications: grip strength, fine motor coordination, problem-solving, visual scanning (scanning environment when collecting natural materials), eye-hand coordination, sensory processing and integration, emotional regulation and frustration tolerance.

Step 1:

● Gather Materials

● Air dry clay

● Dried twigs

● Lazy Susan or Plate

● Other nature items to decorate

● Cup or jar for water

Step 2:

● Roll the clay into a ball shape

Step 3:

● Press your thumb into the center of the clay to make a starting indention

Step 4:

● Pinch around the outside of the clay to widen the indention to form the concave shape of the bowl. Spin the plate or Lazy Susan as you pinch around the edges.

Step 5:

● Use your fist to widen and deepen the bowl, using the Lazy Susan or plate to turn the clay piece

Step 6:

● Dip fingers in water and use it to smooth any cracks or rough edges.

Step 7:

● Break the twigs into similar lengths.

Step 8:

● Push the twigs into the edge of the bowl, forming a line as you go around. Continue until the bowl is covered in twigs like a nest.

Step 9:

● Press other natural items into the clay to decorate. You can also paint it when it’s dry. Enjoy!

● Bonus Step: Blow out eggs to add to your nest.
